Donning Made Easy: Tips for Putting on Your Compression Stockings

Introduction

Compression garments have gained significant popularity in recent years due to their various health benefits and performance-enhancing properties. These garments, made from elastic materials, exert controlled pressure on specific body parts, aiding in blood circulation, muscle support, and recovery.

Although these garments are essential for many people, putting them on (known as "donning" the stocking) can sometimes feel like you are wrestling a particularly enthusiastic octopus. But, don't worry! We have some tips, techniques, and products which can make the donning process easier than ever.

Tips for Donning Your Stockings

Before donning your stockings, here's a few tips that we have to make the donning process as smooth as possible.

  1. Dry, Dry, Dry: Ensure your skin is dry before donning your stockings to avoid snags and discomfort. It's also not recommended to put lotion on before since moisture can make the fabric cling and damage the fabric.
  2. Remove All Rings/Jewelry: To prevent snags or runs in your garment, we highly recommend taking off any rings or jewelry on your hands to prevent them from catching on the fabric.
  3. Avoid Bunching the Garment: When putting on the garment, avoid bunching as much as possible as this can constrict your legs and multiply the pressure in specific areas where the garment is bunched on top of itself.
  4. Use Donning Gloves: We recommend using donning gloves when putting them on to both help grip the stocking and prevent fingernails from accidentally putting holes in the garments.

Donning the Stockings Without a Donning Device

Many people simply pull up the stockings like a standard pair of socks, but this can be a bit difficult to get them on while also risking putting holes in the garment if you apply too much pressure while pulling them up.

To make it easier, we recommend our customers use the following approach to make putting on their compression stockings without a donning device easier than ever.

Here are step-by-step instructions from the video on how to don your stocking:

  1. Insert your hand into the stocking and grab onto the heel pocket
  2. While still holding onto the heel pocket, turn the top of the stocking inside out, so the opening to the garment now starts at the heel
  3. Slide your foot into the stocking until your toe and heel are put in place
  4. You'll then grab the top of the stocking and then pull up and over the ankle and calf

Donning with a Donning Device

Even with different tips and tricks to get compression garments on in the morning, this process can still be a frustrating and long process for many people. For that reason, a number of donning devices have been created to help with getting these garments on, and we'll be covering a few here today.

1. Juzo Slippie Gator

The Juzo Slippie Gator is a donning device that can be used with either open toe or closed toe compression stockings, and it's usually combined with the Juzo Easy Pad. Below is a video on how the Juzo Slippie Gator works to make getting your garments on easier than ever.

2. Jobst Stocking Donner

The Jobst Stocking Donner can also be used for both open-toe and closed-toe garments. However, the Jobst Stocking Donner is different since it uses a metal frame with easy-to-use handles to quickly pull your stockings into place.

3. Arion Magnide On/Off

The Arion Magnide On/Off uses a natural donning motion to quickly and easily get the stockings on. The Magnide provides a smooth surface to pull the stockings over top of and then releases, allowing you to simple pull out the donning device while your stockings stay in place.

Conclusion

Although compression garments are essential for many people, getting them on can often be a difficult and frustrating process. To help with these, we've included some useful tips, techniques, and products that can make your donning experience much easier.
